This may seem repetitive for some of you, but one of the most common things we hear when we see some patients is “It seems like I have a cavity every time I visit the dentist. Why?”. So, just as a reminder, Johnson Family Dental would like to give you four tips to help prevent cavities.

Tip 1: Maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine. Establishing a regular oral hygiene routine is crucial for preventing cavities. Make sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Additionally, don’t forget to floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth and along the gumline.

Tip 2: Limit sugary and acidic foods and drinks. Frequent consumption of sugary and acidic foods and beverages can contribute to tooth decay. Limit your intake of sugary snacks, candies, sodas, and fruit juices. If you do consume them, try to rinse your mouth with water afterward or brush your teeth to minimize the exposure of your teeth to these substances.

Tip 3: Opt for fluoride treatments and dental sealants. Fluoride treatments help strengthen your teeth and make them more resistant to decay. Consider using fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash and ask your dentist about professional fluoride treatments. Dental sealants are another effective preventive measure. These thin plastic coatings are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth to protect them from decay-causing bacteria.

Tip 4: Visit your dentist regularly. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are essential for maintaining optimal oral health and preventing cavities. Schedule dental appointments at least twice a year or as recommended by your dentist. These visits allow your dentist to identify any early signs of tooth decay and provide necessary treatments or recommendations to prevent cavities.
